Homemade coconut butter

I am sure you all know about coconut oil, but have you heard about coconut butter? You might think that this delicious treat is bad for you, but no, it is good for you :). Coconut butter has loads of benefits. It is packed with healthy fats and essential amino acids, calcium and magnesium. It boosts you metabolism and is rich in lauric acid, which destroys harmful bacteria, fungus’s, and viruses and boosts  immunity.

Homemade coconut butter contains only one ingredient, yes you read right, only one ingredient…coconut. For making coconut butter you need unsweetened shredded or flaked coconut and a food processor or high-power blender. I used food processor and it took long, long time (about 40 min) till it turned into butter, so you need to be patient :). Or if you have a good blender (like Vitamix) use that instead of food processor. While making it you need to stop many times and scrape down the sides of the machine. When it is nicely smooth and ready, pour it in to the jar. There is no need to refrigerate coconut butter, keep it in a room temperature. After standing in a room temperature  my coconut butter turned hard and was not spreadable. I softened it by placing the jar with coconut butter in to hot water, after that it was perfect to use. You can also soften it in a microwave, by placing it there for a few seconds or till it is smooth.

So what do you need and what can you add in to your coconut butter…


  • 4 cups of unsweetened shredded coconut or coconut flakes (makes about one cup of coconut butter)
  • honey (optional)
  • vanilla extract (optional)
  • salt (optional)
  • cinnamon (optional)
  • or you can add anything you think might work and you like in it 🙂

How to use coconut butter? Have it with your toast, in smoothies, coffee. Use it for baking, cooking, spread it on pancakes. Combine it with almond butter or eat it with a spoon and have a spoonful or two 😉

  1. This sounds so yummi, I will definitely try it 🙂 I am already a big fan of coconut oil for cooking, skin oil etc… Adding cinnamon to it and spreading on toast will be heavenly! 🙂
