Paleo Hot Cross Buns

I guess I am bit late posting this recipe, but sure we can eat hot cross buns all year around, not only at Easter time :). To be honest they don’t taste exactly like real hot cross buns, the dough, texture and taste is different. Saying that they are tasty and worth to try. They are dairy free, refined sugar free, gluten free and yeast free (by leaving dark chocolate out). I used the healthy chef Teresa Cutter’s recipe and added cacao nibs, raisins and more cranberries into my recipe.

Makes 9 hot cross buns


  • 300 g (3 cups) ground almonds
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • pinch sea salt
  • 1/4 cup macadamia nut oil
  • 4 tblsp honey
  • zest from 1 orange
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • 2 tbsp cacao nibs
  • 2 free range eggs
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 50 g dried cranberries
  • 50 g raisins
  • 40 g dark chocolate for crosses

  1. Preheat oven to 160 C.
  2. Combine all ingredients, except dark chocolate and mix well.
  3. Scoop or spoon out 9 portions onto a baking tray.
  4. Bake about 15 minutes or until golden.
  5. Remove from oven and cool.
  6. Melt dark chocolate. Drizzle crosses on top of buns.
  7. Enjoy 🙂
